Scan. Scan. Scan. I hit scan every time Rihanna’s pop-friendly dance tune “Pon De Replay” played on the radio. When I was ready to dismiss the Barbados native as just a crossover offering by Def Jam, I heard some vocal substance. Rihanna heats up with soulful vocals on “Willing to Wait.” And the catchy up-tempo cut “Let Me” is a tune that will make partiers rush to the dance floor. Just when I think Rihanna may be more substance than fluff, I hear “There’s a Thug in My Life” and its chorus: “There’s a thug in my life/How am I gonna tell my momma?” Scan.
